You’ll never be forced to choose between an eco-friendly mattress and your perfect night’s sleep again. Here’s a quick guide on How to Choose the Best Latex Mattress!
HOW YOUR SLEEPING ORGANIC LATEX MATTRESS IS PERSONALIZED
Over the past decade and more, we’ve worked to create the most personalized 100% natural latex mattress available today. It’s personalized because you create the feel you desire by selecting the firmness of each latex mattress layer when you build your mattress. Below, you’ll find the four main factors we consider when recommending your perfect natural latex mattress configuration through our personalization form. In each section, you’ll also find recommendations of our most popular latex mattress configurations for each factor, like the best natural latex configuration for side sleepers.
Latex Type + Firmness | ILD Rating |
---|---|
Talalay X-Soft | 14-19 |
Talalay Soft | 19-22 |
Talalay Medium | 30-32 |
Talalay Firm | 37-40 |
Dunlop Soft | 19-22 |
Dunlop Medium | 30-32 |
Dunlop Firm | 37-40 |
Dunlop Extra Firm | 44 |
1. Desired Mattress Firmness
A major benefit of Sleeping Organic is that each 3-inch latex layer inside of the organic cotton cover or encasement is customizable. While many latex mattresses, hybrid latex mattresses, blended or synthetic latex mattresses, and memory foam mattresses only let you choose from soft, medium, or firm for the entire mattress, we allow you to choose a firmness for each layer! Therefore, creating the perfect mattress to fit your individual needs. With dozens of options for different latex combinations, Sleeping Organic offers a truly customizable latex mattress. Learn more about custom latex mattresses!
Your latex mattress will be built using multiple layers made up of different latex, either Talalay or Dunlop latex with each layer having its own firmness level. However, in these tabs we’ll give you a general overview of what we’d recommend if this was the only factor to consider when ordering your latex mattress.
As a general rule of thumb, our 7-inch, 2-layer latex mattress is the firmest. Our 10-inch, 3-layer latex mattress is a medium feel. And our 13-inch, 4-layer latex mattress, due to having the most amount of latex can be the softest. The more latex layers and thickness you have the softer, the mattress we can create. This being said, we can also create a firm mattress using our 4-layer, 13-inch mattress.
Great for petite side sleepers and those specifically looking for an extra soft natural latex mattress, this configuration is what they mean when they say “sleeping on a cloud.” Extra soft mattresses have extreme pressure relief and a marshmallow-like feel that envelopes and cradles your body.
For those who want that extra soft, we recommend our 4-layer natural latex mattress or our 3-layer natural latex mattress with a 3-inch soft topper. For those who want extra soft, we encourage a totality Talalay latex mattress, like the configuration below. For a completely personalized recommendation, click here.
4 Layer Custom Extra Soft Latex Mattress Recommendation
100% Talalay Latex Soft – Top Layer
100% Talalay Latex Soft – Second Layer
100% Talalay Latex Soft or Medium (Soft if under 145 pounds) – Third Layer
100% Talalay Latex Medium or Firm (Medium if under 145 pounds) – Fourth Layer
Want to learn more about extra soft Talalay Latex?
A soft organic latex mattress configuration is for you if you love a soft feeling mattress, but not so soft you sink deeply into the mattress. Our soft mattress gives you the ability to sleep on your side with ample cushion for your hips and shoulders, providing pressure point relief in these areas.
Remember: because your mattress is 100% personalized and built with personalized layers, you can make your natural latex mattress firmer by rotating a firmer supportive layer, upward, toward the top of the sleeping surface for a new comfort layer while rotating the softer layer down. Here’s a popular soft configuration.
4 Layer Soft Latex Mattress Recommendation
Soft Talalay Latex – Top Layer (comfort layer)
Soft Dunlop (*Talalay) Latex – Second Layer (comfort layer)
Medium Dunlop Latex – Third Layer (support layer)
Firm Dunlop Latex – Fourth Layer (support layer)
*You could choose either Dunlop or Talalay for this layer. Here’s some more information on How and Why to Choose Talalay or Dunlop.
Here’s more information on How to Choose the Best Soft Latex Mattress.
Most folks prefer a medium feeling natural latex mattress, making this our most popular firmness and configuration. Medium-feeling latex mattresses provide a sleeping surface suitable for every sleep style preference.
Not too soft, not too firm, just a perfect medium. The middle path as the Buddha would say…
3 Layer Medium Configuration Recommendation
100% Natural Talalay Soft – Top Layer
100% Dunlop Medium – Second Layer
100% Dunlop Firm – Third Layer
For more information on How to Choose the Best Medium Latex Mattress.
A firm natural latex mattress is for you if you want a super supportive feel, but not as hard as the floor! A back sleeper’s first choice, latex mattresses built to be firm generally include more Dunlop latex layers because Dunlop latex is firmer and more supportive than Talalay latex. We typically use Talalay latex to create the soft feel.
Remember: because your natural latex mattress will be custom-built, we advise you order a slightly less firm configuration than you think you may need (especially if you’ve never had a latex mattress before) knowing that you can increase the firmness by rotating the firmer layers upward and the softer top layers downward.
We recommend this because you can always make our mattress more supportive and firmer by moving the base layers upward, however you can’t make it softer unless you did a comfort exchange or added a topper.
3 Layer Firm Latex Mattress Recommendation
100% Dunlop Medium – Top Layer
100% Dunlop Firm – Second Layer
100% Dunlop X-Firm – Third Layer
Here’s some more helpful information on How to Choose the Best Firm Latex Mattress.
Extra firm Dunlop mattresses are best for someone who knows they’re looking for something extra, extra firm and has no hesitations about it.
If this sounds like you, then go for it! We recommend a 2-layer mattress for our most firm feel and configuration. The combination of a firm Dunlop layer on top and an extra firm Dunlop layer on the bottom gives you option of having two slightly different firmness levels to adjust if so desired. Of course, our most extra firm configuration would be extra firm Dunlop over extra firm Dunlop.
*We have found that for people that like sleeping on the floor and are minimalist in nature really like using a firm or extra firm 3-inch topper directly on the floor. Check the firm and extra firm 3-inch latex toppers out.
2 Layer Extra Firm Mattress Recommendation
Dunlop Firm – Top Layer
Dunlop X-Firm – Bottom Layer

The #1 Latex Mattress For Every Type of Sleeper
Sleeping Organic means side, stomach, back, and toss-and-turners will all find their perfect night’s sleep.
2. Sleep Position
Your sleep position has less to do with how you want to sleep and more to do with how your body needs to sleep. That’s why whether you’re a side, stomach, or back sleeper matters a lot to us when we recommend your natural latex mattress setup.
In these tabs, we’ll give you an overview of what firmness each sleeper type needs, then one of our popular configurations for each sleep position. We recommend you use our natural latex mattress personalization form here, but these samples are a great guide!
If you’re a side sleeper, you’re in good company. Over 60% of Sleeping Organic customers are side sleepers and our co-founder Brandon happens to be one too.
Side sleepers generally prefer a softer top comfort layer that allows your shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress. This helps alleviate pressure points and promotes spinal alignment. The natural latex mattress configuration you’ll find here is our #1 all-time best-seller, have at it side sleeper!
3 Layer Side Sleeper Configuration Recommendation
100% Talalay Soft – Top Layer
100% Dunlop Soft – Second Layer
100% Dunlop Medium – Third Layer
100% Dunlop Firm – Optional Fourth Layer
Here’s some more information on the Best Latex Mattress for Side Sleepers.
Stomach sleepers prefer a supportive top layer but also want the natural latex mattress to have some give therefore we see that most stomach sleepers like a softer middle layer construction with a firmer layer on top.
Generally, people aren’t on their stomachs for their entire sleep cycle, so this personalized multi-layer sleep system allows us to build an organic latex mattress for those toss-and-turners out there! This configuration below is a medium to firm configuration.
Also, stomach sleeping can be hard on your neck so if you have back and neck issues trying a different sleep style might be worth a try.
3 Layer Stomach Sleeper Configuration Recommendation
100% Talalay Medium – Top Layer
100% Dunlop Soft – Second Layer
100% Dunlop X-Firm – Bottom Layer
Here’s some helpful information on How to Choose the Best Latex Mattress for Stomach Sleepers.
Back sleepers love latex mattresses because there aren’t any springs or lumps or pillow-top padding to create pressure points or soften the feel of the mattress. The smooth, consistent support of the latex foam helps stabilize your back as you sleep.
If you’re a back sleeper, we recommend a firm natural latex foam mattress but not too firm. Our full-zip-off, organic cotton and natural wool cover, with interchangeable layers mean you can always swap rotate the layers around to increase firmness and support if needed.
3 Layer Back Sleeper Configuration Recommendation
100% Dunlop Medium – Top Layer
100% Dunlop Firm – Second Layer
100% Dunlop X-Firm – Bottom Layer
For more information on How to Choose the Best Latex Mattress for Back Sleepers.
3. Weight Range
Weight is an important factor in determining your personal latex mattress configuration, as the more you weigh the more material you compress and the softer the mattress feels. Lighter individuals exert less force on the natural latex foam, where heavier individuals exert more force.
If we put 100lb human and a 250lbs human on the same natural Dunlop latex mattress, the entire mattress will feel softer to the 250 person every time. This being said, we give different configuration recommendations based on difference weight classes.
Here’s a quick guide on How to Choose the Best Latex Mattress based on your weight.
4. Split Layers for Couples
If you and your significant other have different weight ranges, sleeping positions or firmness preferences, we can individualize and customize each side of the organic latex mattress to meet your own individual needs (for no extra charge)!
Don’t worry, you won’t notice a seam or divide in your latex foam mattress! However, if you and your partner are super cuddlers, we can always do a solid top layer to eliminate any fear you may have of a seam.
When you build your queen, king, or California king sized green organic latex mattress at the top of this page, look for the “Split” button to split any layer you’d like.

A Truly Natural All LAtex Mattress
Sleeping Organic is committed to only sourcing the most premium natural materials available on Earth. To keep this promise, we’ve searched all over the world for the healthiest mattress fabrics. From organic cotton and wool to all the components included in your Sleeping Organic mattress.
Pure Latex Foam
At the heart of our organic latex mattresses is 100% non-toxic, non-synthetic, 100% natural latex from rubber trees. All sustainably sourced from organic farms in Sri Lanka and southern India.
When building your custom latex mattress, you pick whether you want 100% natural Talalay latex or 100% natural Dunlop latex for each layer, and for the entire latex mattress you can choose 100% natural Dunlop or 100% natural Talalay or a combination of the two different types of latex.
We’ve included brief summaries about the different types of latex that we offer in this section’s tabs.
***Important for latex mattress shoppers: there’s a difference between all-natural, or just ‘natural’ and 100% natural latex in mattresses.
“Natural latex” is a blend of synthetic chemicals and 100% natural latex, while 100% natural latex is 100% free and clear of synthetics and synthetic materials. This distinction is more important than the difference between natural and organic latex because both 100% natural and organic latex is certified to be free of harmful chemicals found in most conventional and synthetic latex mattresses. On the other hand, “all-natural” or “natural latex” has synthetics and chemical additives added during the manufacturing process.
To learn more about the distinctions and the Differences between “Natural Latex” and “100% Natural Latex.”
100% natural Dunlop latex and GOLS-certified Dunlop is 100% natural and free of harmful chemicals. So, how are organic and natural latex different?
Organic latex must be certified by GOLS (the global organic latex standard), while 100% natural latex does not. Though there are regulations for 100% natural, they’re not as strict as the rules for certifying a product as organic. And due to the manufacturing techniques and manufacturers of Talalay latex, certified organic GOLS latex is only available in Dunlop.
Here’s the scoop on Organic Talalay Latex.
Beyond the sustainability aspect of 100% natural vs. organic in latex, there is no difference when it comes to comfort or longevity of the product.
Talalay and Dunlop latex are the two types of manufacturing processes used in manufacturing latex for use in mattresses after the rubber sap is collected from the rubber tree.
Talalay is the softer of the two, and gives more of a ‘cloud-like’ feel. It is also more expensive to manufacture which is why is cost more.
Here’s some helpful information on the Differences between Talalay and Dunlop Latex.
100% Natural Dunlop is the only type of latex that can be certified organic because the Talalay manufacturing process uses ammonia which dissipates during the curing process. However, this manufacturing and is not congruent with GOLS standards and the 2 global latex manufacturers (Radium and Talalay Global) aren’t interested in offering an organic option as their product demand is extremely high without offering an organic Talalay option. Dunlop also comes in a 100% natural option.
Here’s some information on Organic Talalay if you would like to read more.
All other factors being equal, Dunlop is firmer and more supportive than Talalay. This is offset by Dunlop being a bit more durable. That’s why we generally recommend Dunlop for the bottom support layers of your latex mattress.
Here’s more information on the differences between Talalay and Dunlop foam.
Full Zip-Off Natural Mattress Cover
The organic cotton and wool cover is one aspect of a latex mattress most folks don’t consider until they set up their bed at home for the first time.
You could have the highest quality 100% natural certified organic latex but if the latex is encased in the wrong cover there’s no guarantee you’ll have the sleep organic, natural, cool, comfortable and breathable sleep surface you’re looking for.
Here’s some helpful information on Enhancing your Sleep with an Organic Latex Mattress.
Naturally hypo-allergenic, our eco-wool, non-New Zealand wool will help keep you warm in the winter and sleep cooler in the summer by wicking away moisture. Organic wool and Eco-Wool has the innate ability to regulate body temperature, which makes it the best way to sleep cool at night.
Both of these benefits, as well as a natural fire-retardant, made it an obvious choice for the main material in our mattress encasement, which is sourced from hand-picked organic farms across the United States. Even though it can be difficult to verify organic wool sources from small farms in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, we try and avoid importing organic wool from countries like New Zealand.
Here’s some information on the Benefits of Wool in your Latex Mattress.
Sleeping Organic is committed to sourcing only certified organic cotton. This ensures that the cotton isn’t tainted by harmful pesticides, fertilizers or ecocides, which is important if you want a non-toxic mattress because cotton is the most heavily sprayed fiber with pesticides and industrial cotton is also heavily bleached.
Here’s some good information on Why to Choose Organic Cotton for your latex mattress.
You don’t have to worry about that when you start Sleeping Organic. The fire barrier used in your Sleeping Organic latex mattress cover is made of wool and meets the US law (FR 1633) requirements. To create the fire barrier, wool fibers are tightly woven into layers of batting then inserted and quilted between 2 layers of organic cotton.
Here’s and interesting article from CBS on fire retardants used in mattresses and human health.
We agree with whoever said: it’s the little things in life…
Since the best latex mattress is made of individual latex layers that can be re-arranged as your sleep needs change over the next 20 years, it’s important to have dependable access to the layers inside of the cover to be able to adjust and rotate your support layer and comfort layer. For this you need a zip-off cover.
All zippers are 100% nylon. We used to use a metal zipper but found that it often got stuck and would break off at the handle. We’ve had much more success with the nylon zippers.
Happy with my latex bed!
I have to admit I was a bit unsure about changing from the conventional to a Latex mattress. Im happy to say, this is one purchase I will always remember as being my best purchase ever. My 5 star rating goes to my entire experience, the people at sleeping organic to the quality and comfort of sleep of which Im enjoying every second of. Thank you, Joe M. Pasadena, Ca

Further Considerations for your new Mattress Set-up
- There are a few important organic details to review after you have decided about the right latex mattress configuration. These are bedroom items that if not chosen wisely can sabotage your toxic free oasis and organic bedroom set-up or lead to sleeping hot.
Another word for heavy duty box spring is foundation. Made by Sleeping Organic in the USA, we designed this foundation to be the best foundation to support a heavy latex mattress. It’s super important to make sure your foundation, wether its from us or not, will support the weight of a heavy latex mattress. Natural latex mattresses are much heavier than traditional mattresses and 80% of mattress sagging related issues are due to poor support such as a box spring or foundation’s slats bowing.
Our mattress foundation is made up of solid wood, with slats no more than 3 inches apart that provide a supportive surface for your Sleeping Organic mattress to lay on. It’s covered with organic cotton and wool.
Now, that you have the mattress and foundation squared away it is time to think about if you need a topper. If you like a pillow-top or soft-top mattress feel with support underneath it, a latex or wool topper is the best way to achieve that feel. With all the latex layers of your mattress inside of the mattress encasement, it is difficult to give it that plush top feel. In other words, all the latex inside of the mattress cover makes the mattress more firm than if there is a layer(aka topper) outside of and on top of the mattress.
For more information on our latex topper click here, wool topper click here or for a recommendation on what topper to choose check out our topper personalization form here.
Ok, now you’ve decided whether or not you need a topper. Almost there!
It’s important to keep your mattress clean and have a barrier between yourself, the sheets and the mattress. This helps with wear and tear and keeps the mattress clean. Your main consideration is wether to get a waterproof mattress protector or not. Rule of thumb here is generally, if you or someone sleeping on the mattress don’t have the potential to wet the bed then you don’t need to waterproof it. We carry a handful of mattress protectors, but our crowd pleaser is the Gotchya covered waterproof mattress protector
Think of it as a mini-insurance policy for your bed. Where you’re going, spills don’t stand a chance!
If you decide you don’t need waterproofing then you could opt for an organic mattress pad. These are more thick than mattress protectors which help provide a touch of softness while still providing all the protection you need to keep your mattress clean and limit wear and tear. Here’s a link to our mattress pads but we must say, our washable wool mattress pad is our favorite.
The next consideration is organic sheets. Organic cotton sheets are very important for sleeping cool. Many people don’t know this but the synthetic fibers in blended textile sheets make the bed sleep hot. Please do yourself a favor and make sure you have 100% cotton organic sheets. Also, all-white sheets are notorious for being heavily bleached cotton to keep that crisp white color. Instead of bleach, we use a peroxiding process to make and keep our organic cotton sheets white. Having good sheets with your natural latex mattress is a must. Check our selection of organic sheets out here
Ok! So you’ve got the mattress configured, supported, protected and wrapped in organic goodness. Now, on to the pillow. The pillow is the most underrated item on the bed. A good pillow, can make or break a good night’s sleep or be the culprit of neck or shoulder pain. Have you ever measured the space from your ear going out in space to the edge of the line that runs up from the outside of your arm? If not, you should. This is the amount of pillow space you need to be filled if you are sleeping on your side.
Fortunately, we designed one of our best-selling products of all-time, the Sleeping Organic shredded latex pillow is filled with the same premium latex foam you’ll find in our mattresses, but shredded. However, the pillow itself is customizable so you can take latex out to lower the loft, which is another point of personalization. In other words, you can adjust the height of our pillow to match the space between your ear and the outside of the top of your arm, for the perfect pillow thickness. Check out our latex pillow here.
Vegan Latex Mattress
Sleeping Organic is happy to offer a vegan latex mattress option. The 100% natural latex that we use to build the internal components of our vegan latex mattress come from the rubber tree.
When ordering a vegan latex mattress, you simply go through the custom builder at the top of this page and just make a note when you check out that you would like a “vegan mattress” in the comment section of the order details.
Here’s some more information on the Benefits of Organic Vegan Mattresses.
Here’s a video with our owner talking about Vegan Latex Mattresses.
Unlike our organic cotton and wool latex mattress encasements that are pre-stocked and ready to ship, we custom make each vegan cover with each new order. Please allow for an additional 2 weeks to receive your order due to this. So, your time frame to receive your new vegan mattress is about 3 – 4 weeks.
In the construction of our vegan latex mattress encasement(cover) we use organic cotton quilted with organic cotton batting. So, we take 2 pieces of organic cotton fabric and quilt it with cotton batting.
When checking out just request a vegan cover in the notes of the order details if you would like one! s

Frequently
Asked Questions
Below are some of the most common questions we hear about latex mattresses and the Sleeping Organic process.
Latex Information
Yes, a rubber mattress and a latex mattress are the same. Because latex is made from the sap of a rubber tree, many folks refer to latex mattresses as rubber mattresses.
Synthetic, hybrid, and blended latex mattresses all contain harmful chemicals and are neither organic nor 100% natural. Many bedding companies falsely label these types of mattresses as ‘natural’ or ‘all-natural’ when in fact they contain the synthetics and fire retardants found in traditional mattresses.
Yes!
A big benefit of sleeping on a latex mattress is that latex sleeps cooler than memory foam mattresses. And at Sleeping Organic, we’ve created a special cotton and wool cover that helps wick away moisture, provide air circulation which helps keep your sleeping surface cool. Check out the mattress cover section above for a more detailed explanation.
Yes, we have options to remove wool from our cover. Some options may require a documented prescription from your doctor. Please call or email us if you need a cover without wool.
Yes, we can make virtually any size and shape mattress. Example of custom mattresses we have made include RV mattress, boat mattress, antique bed mattress, custom bunk mattresses and more. Please email us with your dimensions for a quote.
Our Certifications + Organizations
GOLS stands for the Global Organic Latex Standard. GOLS sets the standard for organic latex worldwide, determining which latex is actually organic and which is not.
Sleeping Organic latex carries GOLS-certified latex. It’s listed as step #4 in the mattress builder at the top of this page.
Also known as confidence in textiles, OEKO-TEK is an independent label for various textiles.
All organic textiles sourced by Sleeping Organic are tested for harmful substances through OEKO-TEK.
LGA is a global certifying agency who preforms tests for chemicals, toxicity, carbon foot print, water foot print and product life cycle assessments.
Originally a European certification, Eco-Institute’s services include manufacturing emissions testing and analyzing heavy metals, biocides, phthalates, fire retardants and more.
Pricing
We’ve searched high and low to find the best 100% natural and organic bedding material sources in the world. On top of this, we only sell online which means we’re able to remove the traditional “middle man,” It’s our goal to give as many people as possible a 100% natural, personalized sleep. So instead of pocketing these savings, we choose to pass them along to you, making the Sleeping Organic mattress more affordable than other popular latex mattress companies.
Local mattress stores, and even many “bed in a box” online retailers offer incredibly low price-points, but the sacrifice is that the mattresses themselves are not 100% natural. In many cases, they’re not even ‘natural’ or ‘all-natural.’ We choose not to compete in this space because it would be impossible to offer a non-toxic mattress if we did so.
Your Sleeping Organic mattress comes with the latex foam layers, organic cover, and free shredded latex pillows as a gift to you. We’ll ship you the latex layers and all you have to do is unbox them, insert them into the cover, toss the pillows on the bed, and voila! It’s time to start Sleeping Organic.

Mattress Care & Protection
The zip off latex mattress encasements, also known as our organic cotton and wool covers are not able to be machine washed or dry cleaned! They will shrink!
You need to treat your mattress encasement as you would a conventional mattress. You can spot clean with warm soap and water and air dry.
If absolutely necessary, the latex can be spot cleaned with warm soap and water, a white vinegar and water solution, or using a mild natural detergent.
Make sure the latex dries thoroughly before re-covering.
Do not put the latex in direct sun light as it can cause the latex to oxidize, yellow and prematurely break down at a cellular level.
Here’s some more detailed information on How to Clean your Latex Mattress and How to Care for your Latex Mattress.
We highly recommend a mattress pad or a mattress protector to help keep your mattress investment clean and protected. The main decision at this point, is whether to use a waterproof protector or not.
As a general rule of thumb. If anyone children are sleeping on the latex mattress use a waterproof mattress protector and for adults we recommend using a mattress pad.
