When it comes to enhancing the comfort of your mattress, a soft latex topper can be a game-changer. Not only does it provide an additional layer of cushioning, but it also offers numerous benefits that contribute to a good night’s sleep. There are a couple choices when it comes to soft. Extra soft or Soft? Talalay and Dunlop latex?
Why Choose a Soft Latex Topper?
A soft latex topper is often preferred by sleepers who find their current mattress too firm or by those who simply crave a plush sleeping surface. It can also be an excellent choice for side sleepers who require additional cushioning for their hips and shoulders to maintain proper spinal alignment.
The Benefits of Latex Toppers
- Unlike other types of foam, latex has a unique cell structure that allows for excellent breathability, making it less likely to trap heat.
- This natural material is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making it an ideal choice for allergy sufferers.
- Latex toppers offer superior motion isolation, which means that movements on one side of the bed are less likely to be felt on the other side—a feature particularly appreciated by those who share a bed.
Soft Latex or Extra Soft Latex?
- Extra soft latex only comes in Talalay Latex. So, if you are looking for 100% organic there isn’t an option for extra soft in organic Dunlop. Extra soft Talalay doesn’t provide any support. So, you will feel the mattress underneath of the extra soft topper completely. This type of topper is super soft and more like a layer of fluff that you sink into completely. People who weigh around 100 lbs. that are looking for a soft topper could find that they like or prefer the extra soft latex topper.
- Soft latex comes in either Dunlop or Talalay latex. The Dunlop topper will be slightly firmer than Talalay. Also, if certified organic is important to you then Dunlop is your only option. That being said, we recommend Talalay for soft. It is simply more luxurious than Dunlop and makes the best soft topper. The only time we recommend a soft Dunlop topper is if someone has to have organic.
- The firmness level of a latex topper is measured using the Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) scale. Soft toppers typically have a lower ILD rating and provide a plusher feel.
Latex Topper Type: 100% Natural vs. Synthetic vs. Blended
- 100% natural latex is the only type of latex that we recommend. It’s the cleanest and doesn’t have any synthetics or fillers. It can be purchased in 100% natural or 100% organic Dunlop.
- Synthetic latex is also the same thing as Blended Latex. The only distinction is that synthetic latex is made up completely of synthetic chemicals while blended contains a percentage of 100% natural latex.
2 Inch or 3 Inch Topper Thickness
Thickness is another important factor, as it determines the extent of the cushioning provided. Soft latex toppers usually range from 2 to 3 inches in thickness.
- We always recommend a 3-inch topper when trying to make your mattress softer. Anything less than 3 – inches we’ve found just doesn’t provide enough cushion.
- The only time we recommend a 2-inch topper is when your mattress is almost perfect, and you just want to soften it minimally.
Proper Care for Your Soft Latex Topper
To ensure that your soft latex topper remains in top condition, proper care is essential. Here are some tips on how to maintain your topper and extend its lifespan:
- Purchase a topper cover with your topper. This prevents you from ripping or tearing the latex when you rotate it or flip it. This also keeps the latex clean and covered. You still want to use a mattress protector over the topper and the mattress.
- Rotate and flip the topper every 3 months. Rotate and flip the topper, meaning turn it upside down, move the head to where the foot was, and rotate it side to side so you are sleeping on a different part of the latex topper every 3 months.
Final Thoughts on Soft Latex Toppers
A soft latex topper can be the perfect addition to your bedding collection, offering a luxurious feel, enhanced comfort, and health benefits. When shopping for the best soft latex topper, consider the type of latex, firmness and thickness.
By investing in a high-quality soft latex topper and taking proper care of it, you can enjoy a more comfortable and restful sleep for years to come. Whether you’re looking to soften a firm mattress or simply want to experience the plushness of soft foam, a latex topper might just be the missing piece to your perfect night’s sleep.
