A mattress made from 100% natural latex is non-toxic. It contains no petroleum-based chemicals, no synthetic foams, and no harmful off-gassing compounds. The material comes from rubber tree sap. It is as natural as wood or wool.

The problem is that the word “latex” on a mattress label does not guarantee natural latex. Synthetic latex, blended latex, and the other materials used alongside latex in a mattress can introduce the very chemicals you are trying to avoid. Knowing the difference is essential.
Harvested from Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees. The liquid sap is collected, processed (Dunlop or Talalay method), and vulcanized into foam. The finished product contains no petrochemicals and emits no harmful VOCs. This is the only type of latex that can truthfully be called non-toxic.
Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is a petroleum-derived synthetic that mimics some properties of natural latex. It is cheaper to produce but is fundamentally a chemical product. SBR latex can off-gas VOCs including styrene, which the National Toxicology Program has identified as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”
A mixture of natural and synthetic latex, typically in a 30/70, 40/60, or 60/40 natural-to-synthetic ratio. Companies may market blended latex as “natural latex” or “contains natural latex” without disclosing the synthetic percentage. Blended latex carries the same chemical concerns as fully synthetic latex, proportional to the synthetic content.
The toxicity concern with mattresses goes beyond the latex itself. Conventional mattresses, and poorly made “latex” mattresses, may contain any combination of the following:
Federal flammability standards require all mattresses to resist ignition. Conventional mattresses meet this standard by adding chemical flame retardants to foams and fabrics. Common classes include polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), chlorinated tris, and antimony trioxide. Used in adhesives and as a textile finish. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen (classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer). It can be present in mattress glues, fabric treatments, and some foam manufacturing processes.
Polyurethane foam, the base material in most conventional mattresses, emits VOCs continuously. These include toluene, benzene, and various isocyanates. The “new mattress smell” is literally the off-gassing of these chemicals. VOC emission decreases over time but does not stop entirely during the mattress’s usable life.
Plasticizers used to make vinyl and other materials flexible. Found in some mattress covers and waterproofing treatments. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors that interfere with hormone function. They are particularly concerning for children and pregnant women.

No. Natural latex is harvested from rubber trees. Synthetic latex (SBR) is manufactured from petroleum-derived styrene and butadiene. They have superficially similar physical properties but completely different chemical compositions. Synthetic latex can off-gas harmful VOCs including styrene, a probable human carcinogen.
CertiPUR-US certifies that polyurethane foam meets limits for certain chemicals including formaldehyde, heavy metals, and specific flame retardants. It does not mean the foam is natural, organic, non-toxic, or free from all VOCs. It is an industry-created standard that represents a baseline, not a high bar for material safety.
Allergic reactions to finished natural latex mattresses are extremely rare. The vulcanization process destroys most of the proteins that trigger latex allergies, and the cotton/wool casing creates an additional barrier. People with severe Type I latex allergies should consult their doctor, but casual latex sensitivity, such as reactions to latex gloves, typically does not extend to sleeping on a latex mattress.
