Natural latex has three structural properties that promote airflow and heat dissipation:
Natural latex is an open-cell foam. Unlike closed-cell foams (including most memory foam), the cell walls in natural latex are interconnected, allowing air to circulate through the material rather than getting trapped. When you shift positions during sleep, the compression and release of open cells creates a pumping effect that moves air through the mattress.
Every natural latex layer is manufactured with thousands of pincore holes running vertically through the material. These aren’t decorative. They serve two functions: they create ventilation channels that allow body heat to migrate away from the sleep surface, and they allow the latex mold to heat evenly during the vulcanization process. The result is a material that breathes far better than solid foam.
Memory foam and polyurethane foam are petroleum-derived products that inherently retain heat. They soften with body warmth, which creates a feedback loop: your body heats the foam, the foam gets softer, you sink deeper into the heat pocket, and the foam retains even more heat. Natural latex doesn’t soften with heat. Its response is purely pressure-based, which breaks that heat-trapping cycle.
