A king size latex topper is a 2- or 3-inch layer of natural latex foam that sits on top of your existing mattress. It changes the feel of your bed without replacing the entire mattress, softening a too-firm surface, adding support to a sagging one, or simply upgrading the comfort of an otherwise decent mattress. If your king mattress is close to what you want but not quite right, a latex topper is the most cost-effective fix.
A topper makes sense when your mattress still has structural integrity but the comfort level is off. Common situations where a topper is the right call:
A topper is not the right solution when your mattress is visibly sagging, has broken-down support, or is more than 10 years old. In those cases, you need a new mattress. A topper placed on a failing foundation will conform to the sag and make the problem worse. Consider our Natural Latex Mattress if replacement is the better path.
A standard king topper measures 76″ x 80″, matching the dimensions of an Eastern King mattress. California King toppers measure 72″ x 84″. Make sure you order the correct size, a standard king topper will not fit properly on a California King frame.
Natural latex toppers typically weigh between 35 and 55 pounds in king size, depending on thickness and density. They are manageable for one person to move but easier with two.
The two types of natural latex, Talalay and Dunlop, produce distinctly different feels in a topper.
Talalay latex has a lighter, more buoyant feel. The manufacturing process introduces air into the latex, creating a consistent, open-cell structure. Talalay toppers feel plush and responsive, making them the preferred choice for side sleepers and anyone looking to soften their mattress. X-Soft Talalay (14–19 ILD) provides the most pressure relief.
Dunlop latex is denser and firmer. It provides more support and less give. A Dunlop topper is the right choice when you want to add support to a worn mattress or when you prefer a firmer sleeping surface. Medium to firm Dunlop (30–32 or 37–40 ILD) can effectively rejuvenate an aging mattress that has lost its support.
For most topper applications, especially adding softness, Talalay is the better option. Dunlop toppers serve a more specific purpose: adding firmness and extending the functional life of a mattress that has gotten too soft.
This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is straightforward:
Choose 3 inches if you want to meaningfully change the feel of your mattress. Three inches of natural latex provides enough depth to create a distinct comfort layer that you actually feel. This is the right choice for most people.
Choose 2 inches only if your mattress is already close to perfect and you want a subtle adjustment. A 2-inch topper provides a light enhancement, not a transformation. If you are buying a topper because something is noticeably wrong with your mattress feel, 2 inches will likely leave you wanting more.
We recommend 3-inch toppers for the vast majority of customers. The difference in price between 2 and 3 inches is small relative to the significant difference in impact.
ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) measures how firm a piece of latex is. Lower numbers mean softer, higher numbers mean firmer. For toppers, the most common ILD ranges are:

Natural latex is durable but benefits from basic maintenance:
A king latex topper works on any mattress type, innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, or another latex mattress. The topper adds its own characteristics on top of whatever is beneath it. Just make sure the mattress underneath still provides solid structural support.
For a complete natural sleep setup, pair your topper with a Natural Shredded Latex Pillow for consistent pressure relief from head to toe.
A standard king topper is 76″ x 80″. A California King topper is 72″ x 84″. These are not interchangeable, order the size that matches your mattress.
Talalay for softness and pressure relief. Dunlop for firmness and support. Most people buying a topper want to soften their mattress, which makes Talalay the more popular choice for toppers specifically.
A 3-inch topper is better for most people. It provides enough depth to meaningfully change the feel of your mattress. A 2-inch topper only makes sense if your mattress is already nearly perfect and you want a minimal adjustment.
No. A topper conforms to the surface beneath it. If your mattress is sagging, the topper will sag too. A firm Dunlop topper can temporarily improve a mattress that has gotten too soft, but it cannot fix structural failure. If your mattress is sagging, it needs to be replaced.
A quality natural latex topper lasts 8 to 12 years with proper care. Rotating and flipping it every three months, using a cover, and keeping it protected from moisture will maximize its lifespan.
No. Natural latex has an open-cell structure that promotes airflow. Latex toppers sleep significantly cooler than memory foam toppers and are comparable to sleeping directly on a traditional mattress. The pinhole design in most latex toppers further enhances ventilation.
