Built for Side Sleepers

Why side sleepers need more loft, and why most pillows fail them

First, side sleepers carry the largest gap of any sleep position: the distance from the outside of your shoulder to the side of your head. As a result, a flat or low pillow lets your neck bend down toward the mattress; meanwhile, a too-firm or too-high pillow pushes your head up. Either way, your spine isn’t neutral, and so your shoulders, neck, and lower back pay the price by morning.

This pillow is built around that gap. For example, kapok fiber gives it the natural fullness side sleepers need, while shredded latex underneath keeps it from collapsing as the night goes on. As a result, you get consistent neck and shoulder support from the moment you lie down to the moment you wake up.

  • Tall enough to fill the shoulder-to-head gap: holds your neck in line with your spine
  • Firm enough to stay there: shredded latex prevents the overnight flatten
  • Soft enough to actually sleep on: kapok keeps the surface plush, not stiff
  • Responsive when you roll: springs back when you shift, no re-fluffing

What Is Kapok

A silky, plant-based fill harvested from tropical kapok trees

Kapok is a natural fiber harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra), grown across Southeast Asia, Central America, and West Africa. Each pod opens to release a soft, lightweight fiber that has been used as a pillow and life-jacket fill for centuries. In addition, it’s plant-based, hollow at the fiber level, and silky-soft to the touch, so it’s often compared to down for feel without any of the allergen risk.

Because kapok is hollow, air moves through it freely. As a result, a kapok pillow sleeps cooler than down or polyester. Furthermore, it stays plush without compacting the way feather fill does over time.

  • 100% plant-based: no animals, no petrochemicals
  • Down-like softness: silky feel without the feathers or allergens
  • Naturally breathable: hollow fiber structure moves air through the pillow
  • Sustainably harvested: pods are gathered from trees, no harm to the tree itself

Included Free

Soft cotton zippered cover included

Every pillow ships with a soft, breathable cotton zippered cover at no extra cost. In addition, the cover unzips for spot cleaning of the cover itself, slides easily inside any standard pillowcase, and adds a sheetable surface next to your skin without changing the feel of the kapok fill.

Furthermore, the zipper is a color-matched coil zipper, so there are no metal teeth and no plastic shells. As a result, nothing snags your pillowcase or your skin.

Care Instructions

How to care for your kapok pillow

  • Spot clean only: never machine wash or submerge the kapok fill
  • Fluff periodically: a quick punch and shake keeps the loft even
  • Use a pillow protector: extends the life of the cover and the fill underneath
  • Keep out of direct sunlight: prolonged UV breaks down natural fibers over time
  • Cotton cover spot cleans easily: mild detergent and a damp cloth, no bleach
  • Air it out occasionally: hang in a shaded, breezy spot to keep it fresh

Questions

Everything you need to know

About Kapok & Side Sleeping

What is kapok and where does it come from?

Kapok is a natural plant fiber harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra), grown across Southeast Asia, Central America, and West Africa. The pods open and release a silky, lightweight fiber that’s been used in pillows, mattresses, and life jackets for centuries.

It feels similar to down, but it’s 100% plant-based, no feathers and no animal byproducts.

Why is this pillow specifically built for side sleepers?

Side sleepers carry the largest pillow gap of any sleep position: the space between the outside of your shoulder and the side of your head. A pillow that’s too thin lets your neck bend down toward the mattress; one that’s too firm pushes your head up.

This pillow is filled to a higher loft than a standard kapok pillow and reinforced with shredded latex underneath, so it’s tall enough to fill the shoulder gap and structured enough to hold that height all night long.

Is kapok safe for people with allergies?

For most people, yes. Kapok is a plant fiber, so it doesn’t carry the dander or feather proteins that trigger down-pillow allergies. In addition, the latex inside is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, three of the most common indoor allergens.

However, if you have a diagnosed latex allergy, please consult your doctor before using any latex-containing pillow. Although the shredded latex never touches your skin directly, we want you to make an informed choice.

Can I wash the pillow?

The kapok fill should not be machine washed or submerged. For the fill, spot clean only. The cotton zippered cover can be removed and spot cleaned with mild detergent and a damp cloth.

For everyday protection, we recommend pairing the pillow with a pillow protector, it’s the easiest way to keep the cover and fill clean over years of use.

Choosing & Using Your Pillow

What sizes are available and how big are they?

We offer two sizes: Queen and King, priced at $129 and $139 respectively. First, Queen fits a standard queen pillowcase and works for most side sleepers. On the other hand, King is sized for larger frames or for those who prefer the extra width to wedge against the shoulder.

Who is this pillow best for, and who should skip it?

Best for: dedicated side sleepers, combination sleepers who spend most of the night on their side, anyone with neck or shoulder pain from a too-flat pillow, and people who want a down-feel without animal products.

Skip it if: you sleep mainly on your stomach (you’d want a much lower pillow, see our Shredded Latex Pillow instead, which lets you remove fill), or you want a fully solid latex feel rather than a plush, fiber-fill feel.

Comfort & Performance

Does the pillow sleep hot?

No. Kapok fiber is hollow at the cellular level, so air moves through the pillow rather than getting trapped against your skin. In addition, the open structure of shredded latex underneath helps it sleep notably cooler than memory foam or polyester. Furthermore, there are no gel inserts or chemical cooling coatings, because the breathability is a natural property of the fill.

Will the pillow flatten over time?

Pure kapok pillows do compress with use, and that’s part of why this one blends kapok with shredded latex. As a result, the latex springs back when you shift, so the pillow doesn’t pack down the way down or polyester does. In addition, with regular fluffing, the pillow holds its loft for years.

Ordering, Shipping & Returns

Where is the pillow made?

The pillow is assembled by our manufacturing partner, with the cotton cover sewn in-house and the kapok and shredded latex blended to the right fill weight per size. Kapok fiber is sourced from tropical kapok-growing regions; the latex is natural latex sourced from rubber-tree plantations.

How fast does it ship?

Pillows ship in 1 to 3 business days. Average total delivery is 5 to 10 business days via ground shipping. Free shipping to the continental United States. Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada add a shipping fee, contact us for a quote.

How do I pick the right pillow?

Pillows are personal, and we’d rather help you choose right the first time than process a return. Call us at (800) 625-4042 before you order. Tell us how you sleep, your shoulder width, and what’s wrong with your current pillow, and we’ll point you to the kapok or one of our other natural pillows that fits.

Does this pair with a Sleeping Organic mattress?

Yes. Side sleepers tend to do best on a medium-to-medium-soft surface that lets the shoulder sink in slightly while the hips stay supported. Our customizable natural latex mattress lets you pick a feel matched to side sleeping, and pairs naturally with this pillow.
