Is the Ascend a hospital bed?
No. The Ascend is a furniture-grade adjustable bed base, not a medical device. It offers the two features people most often want from a home hospital bed, height adjustment and gentle tilt, in a residential design with standard mattress sizes. If a clinician has prescribed medical-grade positioning or a certified hospital bed, follow their guidance.
Will insurance or Medicare pay for it?
Generally no. The Ascend is sold as furniture, not as durable medical equipment, so it is typically not eligible for insurance or Medicare reimbursement. Many families choose it precisely because it is a comfortable, non-institutional purchase they control.
How does the height adjustment help?
Lowering the bed makes it easier and safer to get in and out, especially for shorter sleepers or anyone with joint or mobility concerns. Raising it brings the sleep surface to a comfortable working height for a caregiver, helping with transfers, dressing, and bedding changes without stooping.
What does full-bed tilt do?
Instead of bending at the waist like standard articulation, tilt raises the entire flat sleep surface a few degrees, up to 7. Side and stomach sleepers can sleep gently head-up without changing position, which many people find more comfortable than raising the head section alone.
Should I add the support rail?
If anyone using the bed wants help steadying themselves getting in or out, yes. The padded rail mounts to the base, adds $185, and can be removed later if needs change.
What mattress works on an adjustable base?
Adjustable bases need a mattress designed to flex. Our natural latex mattresses are the ideal match: they bend cleanly, recover instantly, and their unglued layers move with the base instead of fighting it. Mattresses specifically built for adjustable beds also work. Traditional innerspring mattresses with rigid border rods should not be used on an adjustable base. If you are unsure about your current mattress, ask us before ordering.
