Best Latex Mattress for Older People

The reality of growing older is that it is one of the many gifts of our beautiful and short time on earth. With each year we acquire new knowledge, experiences, understanding and hopefully wisdom. For those of us blessed with the ability to afford certain luxuries in life we innately are drawn to make our bedroom a sleeping sanctuary.

There are many things that can contribute to this sanctuary. Darkness, cool sleeping temperatures, quietness but let’s forget about the most important part. Our mattress, the place where we rest our bones for hopefully a good 6 to 8 hours each night, totally approximately 1/3 of our life as we sleep.

Unfortunately, with our aging bodies come all sorts of aches and pains as time and life accumulates. So, this time in our life really calls for more attention to having the perfect mattress of our lifetime. For this reason, as well as many others, having a custom latex mattress in which provides the best pressure point relief in the business and allows the mattress firmness to be adjusted over time if need be is crucial.

Let’s explore the benefits of a latex mattress for older people and why it makes sense for them to seriously consider having a custom latex mattress.

Benefits of a Latex Mattress for Older People

1. Unmatched Pressure Relief

As we age, our bodies become more sensitive to pressure points, particularly in the hips, shoulders, and back. A latex mattress provides the best pressure point relief in the mattress industry. The proper amount of pressure relief allows the mattress to conform to the body’s curves while still providing support. This can alleviate aches and pains and promote better sleep.

In general, getting off of any sort of innerspring or coil mattress is going to help pressure point relief. This could be achieved with a memory foam mattress or gel foam mattress, but a latex mattress will have many more benefits. Such as not trapping heat, sleeping cooler, feeling more luxurious, better pressure point relief, has no off-gassing and will last much longer than a memory foam mattress just to name a few.

2. Edge Support on a Latex Mattress for Older People

One of the more important things to consider as we age is how we get out of the bed. A lot of us older folks, like to sit on the side of the mattress, put our feet on the ground and then use our hands and arms with the combined force of our legs to lift us up and out of the mattress to a standing position. For this we need a supportive mattress on the edges that won’t sink in on the sides and make it harder to stand up from.

If you decide to go for a latex mattress for all of its wonderful benefits, know that if you need good edge support that you will need at the minimum a medium firmness to have decent edge support. A super soft or even soft latex mattress will be harder to get up from the edge. If edge support is an important consideration for you, don’t get a soft latex mattress. Latex mattresses don’t have any built-in edge support, so the sides of the latex mattress are the softest part of the mattress.

Alot of this edge support issue can be helped and enhanced with an adjustable bed or foundation which we will cover in the next section.

3. Adjustable Beds (Foundations) for Latex Mattresses and Elders

Adjustable beds are great for so many reasons. Here, let’s list a few:

  1. Excellent and Proper Support for a Latex Mattress
  2. Elevates the Legs to Release Back Tension
  3. Soothing Massage Features
  4. Allows Upright Positions and Leg Elevation when dealing with Injuries.
  5. Removes the need for Pillow Props under the Head or Legs
  6. Ideal for when we’re Sick or Recovering from Injury (R.I.C.E.) Rest. Ice. Compress. Elevate

But one of the core additional benefits is for helping you get out of bed. By raising the head of the mattress up to an upright position it takes all the work off of the abdominals and then you can simply turn your hips and place your feet on the ground, hanging your legs off of the side of the mattress. This can be extremely useful if we have a hard time getting out of bed.

4. Easy to Get in and Out Of

This true and it’s also not true. Being able to get in and out of a mattress depends primarily on good edge support. And for this to be achieved with the right mattress you need the right firmness and height from the floor to make this happen. For this reason, we highly recommend you testing out the edge support on various latex mattresses with varying firmness’s to actually determine if a latex mattress will work for you.

That being said if you have an adjustable base for your latex mattress, it will make it easier to get out of the bed, so the edge support is less of a concern but still a valid consideration.

5. Consider Starting with a Latex Topper

Alot of times customers either don’t have a place to their town or city to try out a latex mattress or they haven’t ever had a chance to sleep on one. If this is the case for you, consider purchasing a latex topper. This is a great place to start to get a feel for the latex product and the topper hopefully can be used in conjunction with your latex mattress if and when you decide to purchase one.  Here’s our Quick Guide to Choosing a Latex Topper.
