Why Natural Latex

The mattress that lifts you, not swallows you

Memory foam slowly sinks under your weight. Natural latex pushes back. It’s buoyant, responsive, cool. It contours to your body’s curves while keeping your spine aligned. No heat buildup, no chemical smell, no body crater after year two.

This is real rubber, tapped from real trees, shaped into the most durable sleep surface on earth. You feel the difference the first night.

Exploded view of organic latex mattress showing customizable layers

Layer-by-Layer Customization

You design it. We build it.

Every 3-inch layer is independently configurable. Choose Dunlop or Talalay latex (Talalay adds $150 per layer) and the current firmness allowed for that layer position. Talalay X-Soft/Extra Soft (14-19 ILD) is reserved for the top comfort layer. For couples, on Queen, King, and Cal King sizes we split each layer down the middle so each side gets its own configuration at no extra charge.

Three heights: The Sprout (7″, 2 layers), The Leaf (10″, 3 layers), or The Tree (13″, 4 layers); the quilted cover adds the final inch. A full-length zipper lets you rearrange layers anytime, so your mattress evolves with you.

Organic Latex Mattress Guide

Build around your body and sleep position

Our organic latex mattress builder lets you choose natural Talalay or GOLS organic Dunlop layers instead of settling for a fixed one-feel mattress. For shoppers comparing the best organic latex mattress options, the modular build makes firmness, layer order, and split-side comfort easier to adjust over time. Each layer can be adjusted for pressure relief, spinal support, and long-term durability, with organic cotton and wool completing the natural sleep surface.

Natural Talalay comfort layers

Talalay is the softer, more buoyant latex option for top-layer pressure relief and contouring comfort.

GOLS organic Dunlop support layers

Dunlop is denser and more supportive, ideal for deeper support layers and customers who want certified organic latex.

The Real Cost of Sleep

1. Choose Your Firmness

Every 3-inch layer is customizable. Pick a different firmness for each one. Soft on top for pressure relief. Firm underneath for support. Any combination you want.

ILD measures foam firmness: higher means firmer. Exact grades differ by latex type and layer position, so use the builder to see only the choices available for each layer. Most customers prefer a softer top layer with firmer support below.

Tip: Go slightly softer than you think. You can always rearrange layers to increase firmness, but you can’t make a firm layer softer.

Three heights available:

  • The Sprout (7″, 2 layers): Great for kids, guest rooms, or firm sleepers
  • The Leaf (10″, 3 layers): Our best seller. Fine-tune comfort and support zones
  • The Tree (13″, 4 layers): Maximum cushioning for 250+ lb sleepers or couples

2. Match Your Sleep Position

Side

Side Sleepers

Over 70% of our customers sleep on their side. You need a softer top layer for shoulder and hip relief.

We recommend: Soft or X-Soft Talalay on top. Medium or Firm Dunlop base for spinal alignment.

Back

Back Sleepers

You need balanced contouring and support. The spine should maintain its natural curve all night long.

We recommend: Medium Talalay or Dunlop top. Medium or Firm base layer. Consistent, even support throughout.

Stomach

Stomach Sleepers

A firmer surface prevents your hips from sinking. This protects your lower back from strain and misalignment.

We recommend: Medium or Firm Dunlop on top. Firm or X-Firm base. Supportive feel throughout.

Combination sleeper? A responsive Talalay top layer adapts as you switch positions. Tell us how you sleep and we’ll dial it in.

3. Factor in Your Body Weight

Your weight changes how the mattress feels. A 130-lb person and a 250-lb person experience the same latex very differently. Heavier sleepers compress foam more, so a “medium” may feel soft.

We adjust firmness recommendations based on your weight range. Lighter sleepers can go softer. Heavier sleepers often need firmer layers to get the same feel. Our personalization form accounts for this automatically.

Weight Guidelines

Under 130 lbs: Soft or X-Soft Talalay top layer

130-200 lbs: Soft or Medium top layer

200-250 lbs: Medium or Firm top layer

250+ lbs: Firm top, 13″ Tree recommended

Split layer latex mattress for couples

4. Split Layers for Couples

Different firmness preferences? No problem, and no extra charge. On Queen, King, and Cal King sizes we split every layer down the middle, so each side has its own configuration.

One side can be X-Soft Talalay over Medium Dunlop. The other side can be Firm Dunlop throughout. No gap, no ridge, no compromise. Both sides share the same organic cotton and wool cover.

Natural latex sap from rubber tree, raw material for our latex mattress

From Tree to Bed

It starts with a rubber tree

Every mattress begins as white sap, tapped from rubber trees in sustainable plantations. That sap is whipped into foam, baked, washed five times, and shaped into the most resilient sleep surface nature provides.

No petroleum. No polyurethane. No synthetic blends. Just 100% natural rubber, the same material that lasts decades in car tires, refined into a surface soft enough to sleep on.

Three Ingredients. Nothing Else.

Every material is natural

Questions

Everything you need to know

Choosing Your Mattress

What’s the difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex?

Dunlop and Talalay are two ways of processing natural latex rubber into foam. Both come from the same raw material, the sap of a rubber tree, but feel different in bed.

Dunlop latex is denser and more supportive. It has a slightly firmer feel and works great as a base or support layer. Our GOLS-certified organic latex is Dunlop.

Talalay latex goes through an extra vacuum-sealing and flash-freezing step that creates a more consistent, airy cell structure. The result is a bouncier, more pressure-relieving feel. Most people prefer it as a comfort layer.

Many of our customers use a mix of both: Talalay on top for cushioning and Dunlop underneath for support. When you personalize your mattress, we’ll recommend the best combination for your body type and sleep position.

Which mattress height should I choose: 7″, 10″, or 13″?

We build three heights, each made of stackable 3-inch latex layers (the quilted cover adds the final inch):

  • The Sprout (7″, 2 layers): Great for children, guest rooms, bunk beds, or anyone who prefers a firmer sleep surface.
  • The Leaf (10″, 3 layers): Our most popular build. Three layers let you fine-tune firmness and create distinct comfort and support zones.
  • The Tree (13″, 4 layers): Our premium build for maximum cushioning. Best for heavier sleepers (250+ lbs) or couples with very different firmness needs.

Not sure? Get a free recommendation and we’ll suggest the right height for you.

How do I pick the right firmness for each layer?

Unlike most mattresses, we let you customize each 3-inch layer individually. Soft comfort layer on top with firm support underneath, or any combination you want.

Our current firmness scale is X-Soft/Extra Soft Talalay 14-19 ILD (top comfort layer only), Soft 19-22, Medium 30-32, Firm 37-40, and X-Firm/Extra Firm 44. Higher ILD = firmer.

Three factors matter most:

  • Sleep position: Side sleepers need softer top layers. Stomach sleepers need firmer.
  • Body weight: Heavier sleepers compress the foam more, so a “medium” may feel soft.
  • Personal preference: Some people just like a firmer or softer bed.

Our advice: Go slightly softer than you think. You can always rearrange layers to increase firmness.

What do you recommend for side, back, and stomach sleepers?

Side sleepers need a softer comfort layer to cushion shoulders and hips. We recommend Soft or X-Soft Talalay on top with medium or firm support beneath.

Back sleepers need balanced contouring and support. A Medium top layer with a Medium or Firm base works well.

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hips from sinking. A medium or firm top layer with a firm layer underneath tends to work best.

Combination sleepers benefit from a responsive Talalay top layer that adapts quickly as you switch positions.

These are starting points. Tell us about your sleep and we’ll dial in the right setup.

My partner and I have different firmness needs. Can you help?

Absolutely, and there’s no extra charge. On Queen, King, and Cal King sizes we can split every layer down the middle, so each side has a completely different firmness configuration.

For example, one side could be X-Soft Talalay over Medium Dunlop, while the other side is Medium Talalay over Firm Dunlop. You each get your ideal mattress without compromise.

The split is seamless. There’s no gap or ridge down the middle, and both sides share the same organic cotton and wool cover.

How does natural latex compare to memory foam?

They’re very different materials:

  • Temperature: Latex has an open-cell structure that breathes. Memory foam traps heat.
  • Responsiveness: Latex bounces back immediately. Memory foam slowly molds.
  • Durability: Natural latex lasts 15-25 years. Memory foam lasts 3-7.
  • Off-gassing: Memory foam releases VOCs for days or weeks. 100% natural latex has no chemical off-gassing.
  • Materials: Our latex comes from rubber trees. Memory foam comes from petrochemicals.
How does a latex mattress compare to an innerspring mattress?

Innerspring mattresses use steel coils for support, which creates pressure points wherever the coil pushes back against your body. Natural latex conforms to your curves instead: no pressure points, no squeaking springs, no partner disturbance from bouncing coils.

Innersprings also trap dust, allergens, and moisture inside the coil chamber over time. Latex is solid foam with an open-cell structure. Nothing collects inside it. Durability isn’t close either: innerspring mattresses typically last 5-8 years before coils start sagging. Natural latex lasts 15-25 years.

What’s the best latex mattress for heavy sleepers?

If you weigh 250 lbs or more, we recommend our 13-inch Tree model (4 layers). The extra layer gives you more material to distribute your weight across, which prevents bottoming out.

For firmness, heavier sleepers typically need firmer layers than they’d expect. A “medium” latex layer feels soft when you compress it more. We usually recommend a Medium or Firm Talalay top layer with Firm or X-Firm Dunlop support layers underneath.

Our personalization form factors in your weight automatically and recommends the right configuration.

Can I use a latex mattress with an adjustable bed base?

Yes, latex is one of the best mattress materials for adjustable bases. Unlike rigid innerspring mattresses, natural latex flexes easily with the base as it moves. It won’t crack, crease, or lose its shape over time.

We carry Ergomotion adjustable bases that pair perfectly with our mattresses. Any quality adjustable base with a flat, slatted surface will work.

Materials & Certifications

What does ‘100% natural latex’ actually mean?

It means the latex is made entirely from the sap of rubber trees with no synthetic fillers, petroleum-based foams, or chemical additives.

Be careful when shopping. Many companies use terms like “natural” or “plant-based” on mattresses that actually contain synthetic latex. If a brand doesn’t specify “100% natural” or show third-party certification, the latex likely contains synthetics.

What’s the difference between natural and organic latex?

Both come from rubber tree sap and feel the same in bed. The difference is certification.

Organic latex is certified by GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) with strict rules for the entire supply chain. GOLS-certified latex must contain at least 95% certified organic raw material.

100% natural latex is the same high-quality material without the organic certification.

We offer both. In our mattress builder, every Dunlop layer is GOLS-certified organic latex at no additional cost. (Note: organic Talalay doesn’t exist because the Talalay process can’t meet GOLS requirements, but our Talalay is still 100% natural.)

Is a rubber mattress the same as a latex mattress?

Yes. Latex is natural rubber. It comes from the sap of rubber trees. “Rubber mattress” and “latex mattress” mean the same thing.

What is synthetic or blended latex, and why should I avoid it?

Synthetic latex (SBR) is a petroleum-based foam mixed with natural latex designed to imitate natural latex. It’s cheaper but contains the same chemicals found in conventional and memory foam mattresses.

Blended latex mixes natural and synthetic, typically 30% natural and 70% synthetic.

Always look for 100% natural or GOLS-certified organic. Sleeping Organic uses only 100% natural and certified organic latex, never synthetic or blended.

What certifications does Sleeping Organic carry?

Our materials are tested and certified by multiple independent organizations:

  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): The gold standard for organic latex worldwide.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests for harmful substances.
  • eco-INSTITUT: European lab testing for VOC emissions, heavy metals, biocides, and fire retardants.
  • LGA Quality Certificate: Independent testing for chemical safety and product lifecycle.

Every certification involves independent, third-party testing.

What is the mattress cover made of?

Our cover has two layers:

  • Outer fabric: Organic cotton. Soft, breathable, and free of chemical treatments.
  • Inner lining: Natural eco-wool quilted into the cotton. Serves as a natural fire barrier and regulates temperature.

A full-length zipper lets you rearrange, swap, or replace individual latex layers anytime.

Is your mattress truly non-toxic?

Every material in our mattress is independently tested and certified free of the harmful substances covered by our certifications:

  • Latex: 100% natural rubber tree sap, no petroleum, no polyurethane, no synthetic fillers
  • Cover: Organic cotton and natural eco-wool, no chemical flame retardants, no bleach, no pesticide-treated fabrics
  • Adhesives: None. Our layers are stacked inside the cover, not glued together

We carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100, eco-INSTITUT, and GOLS certifications, all requiring independent lab testing for harmful substances. If clean materials matter to you, this is as transparent as mattress making gets.

What makes Sleeping Organic different from other organic mattress brands?

Four things set us apart:

  • True layer-by-layer customization. Most organic brands offer soft, medium, or firm, one firmness for the whole mattress. We let you choose a different firmness for every single layer, and split each layer for couples.
  • You can adjust it yourself, forever. Our zippered cover means you can rearrange, swap, or replace individual layers anytime. Your mattress evolves with you instead of being a one-time purchase you’re stuck with.
  • You choose exactly how you want your mattress designed. Dunlop or Talalay or a mix.
  • Factory-direct pricing. We manufacture in-house and sell direct. No retail markup. A comparable custom organic latex mattress from a showroom brand typically costs 2-3x more.

Health & Comfort

Do latex mattresses sleep hot?

No, sleeping cool is one of latex’s biggest advantages. Natural latex has an open-cell structure. Air flows freely instead of getting trapped.

Our organic cotton and wool cover helps too. Wool wicks moisture away in warm weather and insulates in cold weather.

Will the mattress off-gas or have a chemical smell?

No. Off-gassing comes from petroleum-based foams. Our mattress contains zero petroleum-based materials.

You may notice a mild, natural scent when first unboxed, similar to hay. It’s simply the natural scent of latex and fades within a day or two. You can sleep on it the same day it arrives.

I have a latex allergy. Is this mattress safe for me?

Most people with latex sensitivities can sleep on a natural latex mattress safely. During manufacturing, extensive washing removes nearly all allergy-causing proteins. You also never touch the latex directly. It’s fully enclosed in the cover, sheets, and protector.

If you have a severe latex allergy (anaphylaxis risk), consult your doctor first. Call us at (800) 625-4042.

Are latex mattresses good for back pain?

Many customers with back pain tell us it helps. Natural latex contours to your body (relieving pressure points) while providing firm support for spinal alignment.

Our layer system lets you dial in the right balance. Softer top for hip and shoulder relief. Firmer base to prevent sagging. And you can rearrange layers as needs change.

Tell us about your back issues and we’ll recommend a configuration.

Is there a break-in period?

Most people feel comfortable right away. We recommend giving it at least 30 nights to fully adjust, especially if switching from memory foam or innerspring.

If something doesn’t feel right, rearrange your layers or contact us for free guidance. You’re never stuck. Layers are individually swappable.

Can you make a cover without wool?

Yes. We offer wool-free cover options. Because wool serves as our natural fire barrier, some options may require a documented prescription.

Call us at (800) 625-4042 or email us to discuss options.

Does a latex mattress have motion transfer?

Very little. Natural latex absorbs movement rather than transferring it across the bed. If your partner tosses and turns, you’ll feel far less disturbance than with an innerspring or even most memory foam mattresses.

For couples with very different sleep schedules, our split-layer option helps even more: each side has its own independent layers, further isolating movement.

Can kids sleep on a natural latex mattress?

Absolutely. Natural latex is one of the safest mattress materials for children: no petroleum chemicals, no VOC off-gassing, no synthetic flame retardants. Our 7-inch Sprout model is popular for kids’ rooms and bunk beds.

The organic cotton and wool cover is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. And because latex resists body impressions, it provides consistent support as your child grows.

Is a latex mattress good for side sleepers with shoulder pain?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons customers switch to natural latex. Side sleepers need a mattress that lets the shoulder sink in enough to relieve pressure without losing spinal alignment.

We typically recommend an X-Soft or Soft Talalay top layer for shoulder relief, with a firmer Dunlop base layer for support. The combination cushions the shoulder joint while keeping your spine straight. Tell us about your shoulder pain and we’ll recommend a specific setup.

Can you make custom mattress sizes?

Yes, virtually any size and shape. We’ve built mattresses for RVs, boats, antique beds, bunk beds, and more.

Email us your dimensions for a quote.

Why are your mattresses more affordable than other organic latex brands?

We sell direct: no showrooms, no retail markups, no middlemen. Long-term supplier relationships keep costs low.

Instead of pocketing savings, we pass them to you. Our goal: make a truly custom organic latex mattress accessible to everyone.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. We offer flexible financing at checkout through our payment partner. You can split your purchase into monthly installments, often with 0% APR for qualified buyers. Select the financing option during checkout to see your terms and monthly payment.

Questions about financing? Call us at (800) 625-4042 and we’ll walk you through the options.

How heavy is the mattress?

Natural latex mattresses are significantly heavier than conventional mattresses. Approximate weights by size and height:

  • 7″ (2 layers): Twin ~45 lbs, Queen ~75 lbs, King ~90 lbs
  • 10″ (3 layers): Twin ~65 lbs, Queen ~105 lbs, King ~130 lbs
  • 13″ (4 layers): Twin ~85 lbs, Queen ~140 lbs, King ~170 lbs

The weight is actually a quality indicator. It means you’re getting dense, durable natural latex instead of lightweight synthetic foam. Each layer ships in a separate box (max ~55 lbs each), so setup is manageable.

Care, Returns & Longevity

How long will my mattress last?

A well-cared-for natural latex mattress lasts 15-25 years, about 3x longer than memory foam or innerspring.

Natural latex resists permanent body impressions. Plus, each layer is individually replaceable, so you can swap one worn layer instead of replacing the whole mattress.

How does your 365-day comfort program work?

Every mattress includes a full year to fine-tune your setup:

  1. Sleep on it for at least 30 nights.
  2. Try rearranging your layers. Move a firmer layer up or a softer layer down through the zippered cover.
  3. Contact our sleep specialists for guidance. We will help identify the right comfort adjustment for you.
  4. If a swap is needed, purchase up to two replacement layers during your first year at a deeply discounted Comfort Program price and keep the original layers.

See the full 365-Day Comfort Program details.

How do I clean and care for my mattress?

Cover: Do not machine wash. Spot clean with warm water and mild soap, then air dry.

Latex layers: Spot clean with warm soapy water or white vinegar solution. Make sure latex is completely dry before re-covering.

Important: Never put latex in direct sunlight. UV causes oxidation and breakdown.

Best care: use a mattress protector.

Do I need a mattress protector?

We strongly recommend one. Your organic cotton cover is not waterproof or machine-washable.

Our organic waterproof mattress protector won’t change the feel or make it sleep hot.

What foundation or bed frame should I use?

Your mattress needs a solid, flat surface:

  • Slatted platform: Slats no more than 3″ apart. Our Premium RTA Foundation is designed for heavy latex mattresses.
  • Solid platform bed: Any flat, sturdy surface.
  • Adjustable base: Latex works great with adjustable beds.
  • Floor: Works, but a foundation improves airflow and longevity.

Avoid coil box springs. Poor support underneath is one of the most common causes of mattress sagging.

Can I flip or rotate my latex mattress?

You don’t need to flip it, but you can rearrange the layers inside. That’s the advantage of our design. If one layer softens over time, move it to a lower position or swap it out entirely. You can also rotate the mattress 180 degrees (head to foot) every few months to even out wear, though natural latex resists body impressions far better than foam or innerspring.

What if my body weight changes, can I adjust the mattress?

Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of our layer system. If you gain or lose significant weight, your firmness needs can change. With a conventional mattress you’d need to buy a new one. With ours, simply rearrange the layers: move a firmer layer closer to the top for more support, or a softer layer up for more cushion. If that is not enough, our 365-Day Comfort Program lets you purchase up to two replacement layers during your first year at a deeply discounted Comfort Program price instead of replacing the entire mattress.

Can I replace just one layer instead of the whole mattress?

Yes, and this is a major cost advantage over conventional mattresses. If one layer wears out after 10+ years, you replace just that layer (starting around $150-$300 depending on size and type) instead of buying a whole new mattress. The other layers, the cover, and the overall structure keep working. It’s like replacing one tire instead of buying a new car.
